The Brotherhood’s float features a carved image of Our Lady of Mercy and Hope. The sculptor, Francisco Conesa, based in Madrid, undertook the commission in agreement with the Holy Week Board of Burgos and the Brotherhood so that the image could process in 2004.

The cost of the carving was €15,000, covered by the Holy Week Board, to whom the Brotherhood expresses its gratitude for this effort.

Throughout the rest of the year, the image of Our Lady of Mercy and Hope is displayed for veneration on an altar created by the Brotherhood, located at the entrance of the church.

History

Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia y de la Esperanza

The Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy and Hope was canonically established in 2003 at the Parish Church of Our Lady of Fátima in Burgos. Its Statutes were approved on December 1, 2003, by the Archbishop of Burgos.

According to Article 1 of its Statutes, its aims are:

  • To promote devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Lord.

  • To contribute to the dignity of Holy Week celebrations in the parish.

  • To collaborate in the Holy Week events of the city organized by the Holy Week Board, especially in processions, accompanying the image of Our Lady of Mercy and Hope, which began to receive public veneration in the parish upon the foundation of the Brotherhood.

  • To cooperate actively in the parish’s pastoral programs.

  • To foster fraternity among its members.

  • To encourage the social commitment of faith, particularly in support of the poor.

  • To offer prayers for the living and the deceased, especially for members of the Brotherhood.

  • To promote the ongoing Christian formation of its members.

The annual feast of the Brotherhood is celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday. On January 4, 2004, the solemn admission of members and the presentation of the Statutes took place during the 1:00 p.m. Eucharist in the parish.

Its principal devotional acts include a Way of the Cross on the Thursday of Sorrows, a neighborhood procession on Holy Saturday, and participation on May 13 in the parish Rosary procession in honor of Our Lady of Fátima.

The registered address of the Brotherhood is the Parish of Our Lady of Fátima, Burgos (C/ Nuestra Señora de Fátima, s/n, 09007 Burgos).

The Brotherhood has 50 members and is also accompanied by the “Ecos del Cid” Drum and Bugle Band, composed of approximately 25 members.
