Brief Historical Overview

Devotion to Our Lady of Solitude in Burgos dates back centuries, reflecting the city’s prominence in Spain and Europe. The original Brotherhood was canonically established in 1584 in the now-lost Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre of the Cathedral. Its Rule required Eucharistic processions, the Forty Hours devotion, celebration of the Exaltation of the Cross, and special commemoration of Mary’s Solitude, with the participation of cathedral musicians.

By 1586 it was located in the Trinitarian convent and described as “immemorial.” It assisted at burials and organized a Good Friday “procession of discipline,” carrying an image of Our Lady raised high before the brothers.

In 1729 it was based in the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy, comprising members of the local nobility. It processed with the images of the Solitude of Mary and the Holy Sepulchre, carved by Gregorio de Rivales.

The 19th-century confiscations led to its disappearance, and with it the memory of the historic Brotherhood.

The Present Brotherhood

The current Brotherhood was refounded on February 20, 1944, at the Parish of Santiago and Santa Águeda in Burgos. Its first Abbot was Ricardo Arnaiz Bonilla. The image was transferred to the parish in 1949, having previously been kept in the Cathedral.

It maintains the ancient tradition of requesting a royal pardon, today reenacted on Holy Saturday beneath the Arco de Santa María, recalling the 1447 decree of King John II of Castile establishing the “Good Friday of the Cross Pardon.”

The habit, inspired by the Knights of Saint James, consists of a black tunic with wide sleeves lined in red velvet, red silk cincture with tassels, red satin cape, black satin hood with red trim, black gloves and shoes. The Cross of Saint James appears on the chest and hood. The Mayor Brother carries a silver staff (1947) with the Cross of Saint James and crossed palms.

Processions

Since 2024, the Brotherhood opens Holy Week with the “Procession of Christ of the Good Death” on Lazarus Saturday night, carrying a recumbent Christ and a devotional image of the Solitude.

On Good Friday it closes the General Holy Burial Procession. On Holy Saturday, the image is carried on the only surviving historic bier of Burgos Holy Week, visiting the Salesian convent and reenacting the act of pardon. The Cavalry Regiment “España 11” accompanies the procession.

The Brotherhood maintains fraternal ties with:

The Image of the Solitude

The current image was carved in 1901 by Casa Serra, workshop of Ildefonso Serra, for the Brotherhood of the Holy Calvary. It is a dressed image (bastidor type), following the Spanish Solitude tradition inspired by the model commissioned by Queen Elisabeth of Valois in 1565.

In 1934 it suffered severe fire damage during a triduum in the Cathedral and was restored by Eulogio Valladolid. Further restoration was completed in July 2018 by Francisco del Hoyo.

Vestments and Jewels

The principal Holy Week mantle, in black silk velvet embroidered in gold (1902), was later enlarged (1949–1952).

In 2013 a second velvet mantle embroidered in gilded silver was donated by Aurora Martínez Madruga.

A third ensemble (1915) in black satin embroidered with jet, crystal, and aged gold thread was donated by Asunción de Mur and Filomena Tell.

The image also bears:

  • A gilt silver crown with gemstones (Maese Calvo, 1951).

  • A jeweled pectoral cross designed in 1960 by Polo, donated by María José Royuela Arnáiz.
