Processional Floats

AGONY IN THE GARDEN

Author: Ildefonso Serra
Date: 1901

Iconography: On the stone upon which Jesus rests His hands stands an angel with outstretched wings, holding a cross in his right hand and offering the Lord a chalice with his left hand.

OUR LADY OF SORROWS

Author: Unknown
Date: 18th–20th centuries

Iconography: The image of Our Lady of Sorrows represents the Virgin in her suffering during Christ’s Passion. Her face expresses grief, with lowered gaze and realistic features. She is dressed in black with gold embroidery, symbolizing mourning and royalty, and wears a white veil representing her purity. Among her attributes are the heart pierced by a dagger, hands raised in supplication, a handkerchief for her tears, and a golden crown as Queen of Heaven.

History

The float was donated by Mr. Vicente Alonso Ortega and his wife, Mrs. Juana del Nero, in 1902. The image was carved by Casa Serra of Barcelona in the same year. The float was originally linked to the Jesuit Fathers until 1985, when it was entrusted to the Parish of San Pedro de la Fuente. Since then, it has been processed by the Brotherhood of the Agony of Jesus in the Garden, based in that parish. The brotherhood currently has approximately 70 members.

The float leads the Good Friday Holy Burial Procession. The Brotherhood of the Agony of Jesus in the Garden also processes the image of Our Lady of Sorrows on the Friday of Sorrows through the streets of the San Pedro de la Fuente district, marking the beginning of Holy Week processions in Burgos.

The brotherhood meets once a month, from September to June, in the parish halls to discuss internal matters and to report on issues addressed at the Holy Week Board’s monthly meetings.

The brotherhood’s habit consists of a grey tunic tied with a grey and maroon Franciscan cord, a maroon cape worn with the face uncovered, and a traditional Spanish mantilla with a black suit.
