History

Hermandad del Santo Sepulcro

The Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre of the City of Burgos was founded during Lent in 1927. It processed for the first time on Friday, April 15, 1927. Its Rule was approved on March 27, 1928.

The principal aim of the Brotherhood is to promote the greater glory of God, especially in the Mystery of His Death, through which He redeemed us from sin. It also has the special purpose of honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of her Assumption, venerated as Saint Mary Major in the Cathedral Basilica.

Membership is restricted to Catholic men over the age of 23, faithful to the Holy Catholic, Apostolic, and Roman Church. The total number of Brothers is limited to thirty-three, in commemoration of the age at which Christ redeemed humanity.

The Brotherhood shall have a Spiritual Director, a priest member appointed by the Prelate.

For its proper governance, it shall have a Governing Board composed of the Prior, Sub-Prior, Procurator, and Secretary, together with the Spiritual Director.
