Burgos Holy Week takes centre stage with a new book exploring its history

Burgos Holy Week once again becomes a focal point of the city’s cultural life with the publication of a new book that traces its historical evolution and highlights its rich heritage and devotional significance.

The work, titled Semana Santa de Burgos and written by Juan Ruiz Carcedo, has been published by Fundación Círculo Burgos in collaboration with the Chair of Artistic Heritage Studies at the University of Burgos.

The book was presented at the headquarters of Fundación Círculo Burgos in an event attended by its president, Mr. Emilio de Domingo Angulo.

The volume offers a comprehensive overview from the Middle Ages to the present day, addressing the origins of the first brotherhoods, the evolution of rituals, and the development of processions as a public expression of the Passion.

Structured in three sections, the book combines historical analysis with a contemporary perspective: firstly, the evolution of Burgos Holy Week; secondly, the processions currently held in the city; and finally, an overview of the 16 brotherhoods that make up the Junta de Semana Santa.

The publication includes more than 150 photographs—many of them in colour—and aims to bring readers closer, through an accessible and informative approach, to one of the most significant cultural and religious traditions in Burgos.

With this new publication, Burgos Holy Week continues to strengthen its cultural projection and its recognition as one of the city’s key heritage landmarks.
